Eve Myles interview
Eve Myles plays Lauren Grey in You, Me & Them...
Hi Eve. The first series of 'You, Me & Them' was well received. Why do you think that was?
It chimed with viewers because it's all to do with relationships, and we can all identify with that. Also, audiences seemed to really warm to these characters.
What developments can we expect in the second series then?
Lauren and Ed are happier than ever together, but everything starts to shift gear. That is partly due to the arrival of Ed's mother Rose [played by Honor Blackman].
Lauren falls madly in love with Rose - they're both wonderfully free-spirited women. I recognise that, at first, Rose might seem attractive, but that soon changes. Lauren's initial infatuation with Rose, of course, inevitably leads to hilarity because it disrupts the relationship between Lauren and Ed.
So, Lauren and Ed are now really settled together?
We've established their relationship, and now we're building on it. There is nothing harder than setting up a comedy. Viewers think, 'What is this programme?' But we've really developed it from the first series. We had a strong story to begin with, but now it's even stronger.
Now their relationship is about how Lauren and Ed play and make each other laugh. They're very silly with each other, and that's very important. Many of the best relationships are between couples who make each other laugh. But also this year there is some poignant stuff...
Do you enjoy playing Lauren?
Absolutely. I adore playing her. She's such a lovely woman! Sometimes it's hard playing characters like her, but I didn't find that at all with Lauren. I really like her.
What does Ed add to Lauren's life?
Lauren is 35 and has had an up and down past. She didn't know who she was before. She was constantly in search of something. She was always travelling and never had anyone to settle down with. She was a free spirit expressing her inner child, but she was never able to share that with anyone. But now she has Ed and can start a new chapter in her life. For the first time, she has to take responsibility - she's never had anyone else to think about before. As attractive as travelling was, now she's leaving that behind to focus on her partner. All along, Ed was her holy grail!
In what way?
They fix each other. He is the structure that she needs and she is the free spirit that he needs. Above all, they're best, best friends and deeply in love.
How has it been working with Anthony Head?
It's been wonderful. We genuinely trust each other. It can be suffocating working with certain actors, but with Tony it's great. We always work on instinct. We play with the relationship and keep it alive. You can't do that with everyone, but it's really important to keep it fresh, especially in comedy. Working with Tony has been an absolute joy!
