Writers Anthony Jay and Jonathan Lynn first approached the BBC about reviving the series. However, they insisted they would need to produce a pilot episode first. Jay explained: "We felt that we had already done 38 pilots, apart from the stage version, so we said no. But UK Gold did not want a pilot, so we said yes."
Former BBC chief political correspondent John Sergeant - the celebrity proponent for Yes Minister and Yes, Prime Minister during 2004's Britain's Best Sitcom TV poll - was the studio audience warm-up performer for this series.
Despite not being commissioned by the BBC proper, the UKTV network - of which Gold is the flagship channel - is 50% owned by the corporation's commercial arm, BBC Worldwide.
Yes, Prime Minister was produced for Gold by BBC Comedy - believed to be the first time a BBC in-house production department has made a programme for a non-BBC branded channel.
