Character guide

Mary Trewednack

Played by: Dawn French

Mary and Ange are wishy-washy lesbians, together because no one else will have them, but easily swayed when any interest is expressed by a passing male.

The pair run the local shop and post-office and appear to be willing to stop at nothing to make a profit. They do everything from selling stolen goods to spreading tourist-attracting rumours to ensure their sales remain good. Of course Mary's new boyfriend PC Alan's ice cream addiction helps keep the till full.

Angela Phillips

Played by: Catherine Tate

Ange, a relative newcomer to the county, dreams of a life outside the confines of the pretty but sometimes suffocating village, but her attempts to flee are cleverly thwarted by the surprisingly duplicitous Mary.

Jake Trethowan

Played by: David Bradley

Quiet, old and very weird, sea-dog Jake is the local fisherman who would love to get intimate with either Mary or Angela or even better both.

PC Alan

Played by: Stewart Wright

Kind, blunt and dedicated copper PC Alan Alan (yes his first and second names are the same) is St Gweep's law enforcer who does everything by the book, just not very well.

Jeff

Played by: Sean Foley

Pub landlord Jeff keeps all the locals liquored up.

Harry

Played by: Richard Mylan

Harry is the slow-witted and very intense village handyman.

Holly

Played by: Anne-Marie Duff (Series 1) and Robin Weaver (Series 2)

Holly is the proprietor of the local witchcraft museum and has a spell or two up her sleeves.
