TV review, Warren, BBC One

If you watch the right programmes - Derry Girls, Catastrophe - you could easily argue that we are going through a golden age of sitcom at the moment. On the other hand if you watch Warren, starring Martin Clunes as the perma-grumpy titular driving instructor, you might feel that the sitcom is fatally wounded.

Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke, 10th March 2019

What were they thinking of with Warren? Poor Martin Clunes: after so much redemptively good work - Vanity Fair, Manhunt, even Doc Martin's a lovely rounded well-acted part - he has apparently chosen to star in a "comedy" that could have been written in 1974. About a grumpy driving instructor. And that's it, folks. No jokes, no clever lines, no acknowledgments that there's nothing inherently laugh-out-loud in just saying "garden centre" or "driving instructor", or indeed that time and tastes move on and all that's left is a talented actor staring at the camera with what's meant to be sardonic pith but might actually be howling existential angst.

Warren review

A star as miserable as Victor Meldrew? I don't believe it! Christopher Stevens enjoys Martin Clunes' performance as a tight-fisted, bullying driving instructor on BBC1's Warren.

Christopher Stevens, Daily Mail, 26th February 2019

Warren review

Curmudgeons have forever been a cornerstone of comedy, but the problem with Martin Clunes's Warren - well, one of many problems - is that he's not just grumpy, he's just an unpleasant shit.

Steve Bennett, Chortle, 26th February 2019

Is it 1980, again? You could certainly be forgiven for thinking so on the evidence of this dire new sitcom from writer Jimmy Donny Cosgrove, which stars Martin Clunes as Warren, a permanently harassed driving instructor. The strangest comedy hors d'oeuvre for a new Alan Partridge show you will ever see.

Mike Bradley, The Guardian, 25th February 2019

Warren, review: laughs are in short supply

This new comedy about a beleaguered driving instructor who moves up north lacked wit, empathy, and heart.
