The Trip To Spain, Episode 2 - Etxebarri
Steve and Rob begin the second leg of their culinary odyssey as they head through the Basque Country to Etxebarri - a Michelin-starred restaurant close to Bilbao. After experiencing a delectable eight-course tasting menu (during which Rob confirms to Steve that the Welsh for carrot is 'moron'), the pair head towards Sos del Rey Católico - taking an opportunity to belt out ABBA's SOS along the way.
Location Guide
After spending the night among the beautiful and historic ruins of the Basque town of Hondarribia, you won't want to miss the Michelin-starred restaurant Etxebarri, situated about one hour away near Bilbao, the de facto capital of the Basque region. Food critic Jay Rayner has described the restaurant as "a point of pilgrimage for food nerds from around the world". Head chef Bittor Arguinzoniz is famed for his mastery of the barbecue, and cooks absolutely everything over burning wood. Right down to the desserts.
Once you've had your fill, you can take a trip down the traditional pilgrimage route of Camino de Santiago, admiring the rolling scenery along the way, before arriving at the exceptionally well-preserved historic town of Sos del Rey Católico, with its city walls, churches and plazas dating back to the 12th century. Try to refrain from singing ABBA's SOS as you arrive.
