It is the early 1960s, and Harry Thorpe is an AA patrolman living in a small town in Hampshire.
Although still quite enthusiastic, and ultimately dedicated to his job, he has grown somewhat disillusioned with some of the organisation's advancements in recent years, and lacks the concentration he once had. Now more accident-prone than not, he does his best - but is it enough?
