The Grimleys is set on the Jericho Council Estate, Dudley, in 1975. Young Gordon Grimley hopes to go to university one day (against the wishes of his slobby dad, Baz) but, in the meantime, has visions of romance with his attractive English teacher, Miss Titley, who also happens to be his neighbour. As if this ambition is not already too great, standing obstinately in the way is his sadistic gym teacher, Doug Digby. More amenable is Mr. Holder, the music teacher, played by the former lead slinger of Slade.
Littered with 1970s references, from Vauxhall Vivas to Angel Delight, The Grimleys is a nostalgic wallow for anyone who was a teenager at the time. Apart from the aforementioned Mr. Holder, there were also cameo appearances by 1970s figures Alvin Stardust (as a barman), William Woollard (science teacher), Frank Bough (newsreader), Jim Bowen (shop steward), Stephen Lewis (bus driver), Patrick Mower (hero), Johnny Ball (teacher) and Tony Blackburn (swinger).
