American romantic writer James Howard, who has a rose-tinted view of the UK, comes to Britain for the first time to research his latest novel. He arranges to stay with fellow writer Deddie Tobert, a sharp-tongued British bulldog recovering from the latest in a series of failed relationships.
Deddie's misgivings about the American coming to stay with her are quickly removed when she sees Howard's latest novel, which features a picture of him as a dashingly handsome young man. Things quickly go downhill though when Howard turns out to look nothing like his photo and turns out to have a totally incompatible personality. Still, somehow a spark of romance is ignited.
