For Ashley Parkerwell, a bachelor in his mid-forties, the death of his mother is a turning point. Up to now he's been beholden to his late mum and he now glimpses an opportunity to break free and to live life as it should be lived.
Right from the day of her funeral, he begins to turn his mind to attractive women and, at the prompting of his positive sister-in-law, Colette, and his sapient housekeeper, Mrs. Rudge, he begins his quest for fulfilment, overriding the wishes of his dull, long-time girlfriend, Gillian, and her pushy mother.
But the women Ashley meets usually bring more trouble than he'd like and he can't expect much sympathy from his successful brother Mike.
