Pamela, married for 20 years but now separated, and her recently divorced friend, Jackie, attend a singles' bar as a step towards finding a new relationship. There they meet bachelor market-trader Malcolm and hospital porter Clive, whose wife has left him with three children to raise.
Malcolm's claim to be "big in imports" and Clive's fake profession of "doctor" are exposed by Di, the club's Liverpudlian barmaid, but all the same the girls and guys strike up a friendship which lasts through peaks and troughs. Malcolm and Pamela pair up, as do Clive and Jackie. For the third series, Malcolm is replaced by out-of-work thespian Dennis Duval.
