Tolu Ogunmefun interview

Sick Note. Ash Matthews (Tolulope Ogunmefun). Copyright: King Bert Productions

Tolu Ogunmefun plays Ash, Daniel's friend. He talks about how the start to the read through didn't go great for him.

What did you think when you first read Sick Note?

Amazing. When I first locked into page one, that was it. I've not read a script so quickly in my life. I think it was just the balance between dark and comedy. It was just like this is bad but it's so funny at the same time so I think that's what really captured me.

Who is Ash?

Ash is an interesting character. He is sleeping with Daniel's girlfriend. How he got to that situation I don't know exactly. But it's that thing in life where you find yourself in an awkward situation and it's like, 'Oh shit I'm here now do I get out, do I continue? How do I get out?'

How have you found working with Rupert?

I don't like him at all. Nah I'm joking, he's a fantastic guy. He's so humble, he's such a gentle soul. I remember the first time going to the read-through I went to the wrong place, so I had to run all the way to Tottenham Court Road and I was sweating. It was my first time meeting Rupert, first time meeting Nick and everyone, and there's a massive round table and I've come in and it looks like I've just had a bath. And the producer is like, "Do you want another shirt?" And I'm like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah," so I have to rush out. The shirt was too big so I'm just sitting down with so much tissue and Pippa's next to me, she's like, "Have you met Rupert?" And I just turn and I see Rupert and I'm like, "Hey buddy, hi, I'm playing Ash". So that was our introduction. But he's a very cool guy.

Why do we root for Daniel and Dr Glennis?

I don't know, I guess it's that you can see that they're still human. It's just like any normal person getting themselves in a mad situation. You know, that feeling of 'well I'm not a terrible person but this is what I've got myself into'? So you can kind of sit back and understand that.
