Having saved his life on the battlefields of France, James Twelvetrees is now footman to Teddy Meldrum's brother, Lord Meldrum's, household. When the elderly butler dies James is hopeful of promotion, but fellow ex-serviceman Alf Stokes is also looking for employment.
