  • Superpowers-focused comedy drama Extraordinary has ended after two series

  • "We're so proud of the hilarious, award-winning series brought to life by the incredibly talented British and Irish cast and crew"

Extraordinary, the Disney+ comedy drama in which characters have superpowers, has been cancelled after two series.

Written by Emma Moran, the show launched on the streaming platform in January 2023, with a second series following in March 2024. The episodes followed Jen, played by Mairead Tyers, a woman aiming to discover her superpower.

The plot is described as follows: "Ten years ago, everyone over the age of 18 got their superpower. But Jen, a painfully self-aware 25-year-old woman, is still waiting to get hers. She'd take anything at this point. Adrift in a big, confusing world and armed with nothing but a bit of hope, a lot of desperation and her flatmates, Jen begins her journey to find her maybe-superpower."

The comedy, which was nominated for a number of awards, also starred Sofia Oxenham, Bilal Hasna, Luke Rollason and Siobhán McSweeney.

A spokesperson for Disney+ told trade publication Variety: "Disney+ Original series Extraordinary will not be returning for a third season on the service. We're so proud of the hilarious, award-winning series brought to life by the incredibly talented British and Irish cast and crew, our production partners at Sid Gentle Films, and the exceptional writing talent of creator Emma Moran."

The second series ended with a cliff-hanger, so news of the cancellation means viewers will not get a resolution to what happened to Jen. One fan commented online: "I loved this show so much, I randomly came across it and binged it. I don't think I have ever seen promotion for it. Maybe a British broadcaster can take it on at least for one more season... I need to know what that void is!"

Disney+ will continue to make other original British series, although it was revealed last week that it has had to scrap the second series of The Completely Made-Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin mid-series reportedly due to the fact central star Noel Fielding has stopped showing up for work.
