My Lady Jane cancelled by Amazon
- My Lady Jane will not return to Amazon Prime Video for Series 2
- The comedy drama, starring Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel, launched in June to good reviews
- Industry website deadline notes the eight-part series didn't land in the weekly streaming rankings for original shows
Amazon Prime Video has reportedly decided not to give a second series to My Lady Jane.
Launched on the streaming platform at the end of June, the historical comedy drama imagined what would have happened if Lady Jane Grey had not lost the throne after just nine days. Additionally, it added elements of shape shifting to some of the characters characters, as had been devised by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows who wrote the young adult books upon which the TV series devised by Gemma Burgess is based.
Emily Bader played the lead role of Jane Grey, with Edward Bluemel as love interest Guildford Dudley.
The cast list also featured Anna Chancellor, Rob Brydon, Kate O'Flynn, Dominic Cooper, Henry Ashton and Jordan Peters.
The eight-episode series ended with narrator Oliver Chris declaring "our story is not over yet", but this weekend's news suggests that viewers won't now learn what happened after Jane and Guildford rode off together.
Industry website Deadline says: "The news is not entirely surprising. Creatively, My Lady Jane has done well. Despite taking a very big swing with a premise that crosses genres that don't normally co-exist - historical romance, fantasy, adventure, comedy and farce - it has been among the best reviewed new series this year. But it didn't find a broad enough audience, never landing on Nielsen's Top 10 weekly streaming rankings for originals."
