  • The BBC has confirmed two new Mrs. Brown's Boys specials
  • The new episodes will air this coming Christmas season, as has become traditional
  • It was the second-most watched comedy of the year in 2023

Mrs. Brown's Boys will be back on BBC One later this year.

The BBC confirmed to British Comedy Guide that the long-running family sitcom will return for its now-traditional Christmas and New Year specials at the end of 2024.

Starring Brendan O'Carroll as working class Dublin matriarch Agnes Brown, they are expected to be broadcast at around 10pm on Christmas Day and New Year's Day 2025, respectively.

Jon Petrie, BBC Director of Comedy, said: "Brendan has created an iconic comedy character in Agnes Brown. Mrs. Brown's Boys is a BAFTA-winning comedy show and one of the BBC's most-watched comedies ever. It's made me laugh many times and seeing Mrs. Brown's Boys live is an unforgettable experience - I feel very lucky that I've had the chance to witness it and I'm proud to have it in the BBC Comedy stable."

Running since 2011, the series - co-produced for Ireland's national broadcaster, RTE - has always been highly popular with audiences but loathed by both critics and the television industry.

In 2023, the Christmas Day Mrs. Brown's Boys special was the second most-watched comedy episode of the year, losing out only to the Ghosts special, with 5.2 million and 7.2 million viewers, respectively.

Likewise, the four-part fourth series was second only to Ghosts fifth and final series as the most-watched comedy series of the year, averaging 3.2 million viewers per episode to Ghosts' 4.9 million.

At a BBC comedy event earlier this week, Petrie explained: "[Viewers] want jokes, they want shows that make them laugh and the ones that they are re-watching again and again are Ghosts, Motherland, Not Going Out and Mrs Brown's Boys. They still get huge numbers for us."

Petrie repeated a recent call for new narrative pitches to the broadcaster for broad, mainstream, laugh-out-loud sitcoms rather than darker and comedy drama-type formats, for which they are currently overserved.
