ITV has ordered a primetime comedy quiz from Romesh Ranganathan and his mum Shanthi, British Comedy Guide can exclusively reveal.

Romesh Ranganathan's Parent's Evening, which is made by the comedian's production company Ranga Bee (Avoidance, The Reluctant Landlord), has landed a three episode commission and is expected to air later this year, with celebrity pairs of contestants judged on both their general knowledge and by Shanthi.

In the hour-long ITV1 show, contestants' fortunes "lie in the hands of those supposed to know them best ... their parents", with Shanthi keeping a watchful eye and her eldest son, a former maths teacher, in his place.

As BCG revealed in February, run-throughs of the show have been taking place in London since September, with a non-broadcast pilot, called Parental Guidance, filmed in March.

Shanti co-starred with Romesh in five series of their BBC Two topical comedy show The Ranganation and the travelogue Asian Provocateur. The pair also piloted a chat show together for the broadcaster last year.

She has also appeared with her son on A League Of Their Own, Judge Romesh, QI, Alan Carr: Chatty Man and Ranganathan's US-set documentary Just Another Immigrant. The comic, who has three sons and already hosts The Weakest Link quiz for the BBC

Dared by the Duchess of York, Ranganathan demonstrated his 1980s dad dancing on ITV's daytime show Loose Women last week while promoting the fourth series of his BBC Two travelogue The Misadventures Of Romesh Ranganathan, which concludes this week with him visiting Madagascar.

His Hustle stand-up tour resumes with international dates in the autumn and continues until the summer of 2025.
