G'wed recommissioned for two series
G'wed, ITV's hit sitcom about a group of working class teenagers attending a school in Liverpool has reportedly been recommissioned.
A report in industry publication Broadcast says ITV has given the greenlight for a second series. A recommission has been expected, as the comedy has attracted a large audience and received great reviews from viewers and the press.
The six-part first series launched on ITVX in February, with repeats on ITV2 and ITV1 following.
The comedy has now been streamed over 4.9 million times and clocked up 1.7m viewers on television. It is ITV2's most watched programme of the year after Love Island and the biggest sitcom launch on the ITV network since Kate & Koji in 2020.
The debut series from writer Danny Kenny, the comedy stars Dylan Thomas-Smith as Reece and Jake Kenny-Byrne as Christopher. Reece is a superficially misbehaving potty-mouthed lad who becomes an unexpected friend to Christopher, who has transferred from a posh school following a parental death.
The cast list also features Max Ainsworth, Dominic Murphy, Zak Douglas, Amber Harrison, Gemma Barraclough, Evie Ward-Drummond, Malek Alkoni, Leanne Best, Jemma Churchill, Paddy Rowan and Philip Shaun McGuinness.
The series has been noted for, in amongst the comedy, touching upon topics such as grief, sexuality and class.
Speaking about the show's success, Nana Hughes, Head of Comedy ITV, recently said: "It's amazing to see the success of G'wed across ITVX and the linear channels, a true testament to the new talent involved, the hugely talented cast, excellent authentic writing by Danny Kenny and expertly executive produced by Mario Stylianides. I'm thrilled that G'wed has found a home at ITV and that the comedy resonated with our audience."
Mario Stylianides, who is the executive producer at Golden Path Productions, notes: "This truly was a labour of love for everybody involved in the production of the show, so for it to connect with such a large and broad audience is something we are immensely proud of. For a first-time writer and cast to hit the heights that they did is extraordinary. A massive thank you to Nana Hughes and Kevin Lygo at ITV for believing in us right from the very start, guiding us to make the show better and giving us the freedom to realise Danny's vision for the project."
