- It's been officially confirmed that Gavin & Stacey will return to the BBC this Christmas Day for a final special
- James Corden and Ruth Jones are pictured holding a script for the episode titled 'the finale'
- The sitcom's last special in 2019 was watched by over 18 million viewers
The BBC has confirmed that Gavin & Stacey will return on Christmas Day 2024 "for the last ever episode".
A short statement from the BBC says: "We'll have: A chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, bag of chips, keema naan, nine poppadoms and the last ever episode of Gavin & Stacey!!! Coming this Christmas Day on BBC One and iPlayer."
The BBC has also released a picture of writers James Corden and Ruth Jones, who also play Smithy and Nessa in the show, holding a script titled 'Gavin and Stacey: the finale'.
Writing on Instagram, Corden confirmed: "We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin & Stacey. See you on Christmas Day."
Further details are expected to be released later this year, but all the key cast - including Mathew Horne as Gavin, Joanna Page as Stacey, Alison Steadman as Pam, Larry Lamb as Mick, Melanie Walters as Gwen and Rob Brydon as Bryn - are expected to return to their characters.
The reunion of the hit comedy's cast was first reported in February, however the next day Ruth Jones poured cold water on the reports, saying they were just "sadly a rumour". Today's announcement by the BBC officially confirms the sitcom is returning.
The programme, which launched in 2007, last aired a special on Christmas Day in 2019, almost a decade on from its third series. The episode was a ratings hit, watched by over 18 million viewers. The 2019 special ended on a cliffhanger involving the relationship between Nessa (Jones) and Smithy (Corden). The new episode is expected to reveal what happened next.
