Gavin & Stacey 2024 Christmas special confirmed
Gavin & Stacey co-creator Ruth Jones has played down the possibility of the hit sitcom returning for a Christmas special.
Yesterday, US entertainment site Deadline reported that the show was set for a one-off episode return in December, five years after the last aired.
But Jones has poured cold water on the speculation today. Without fully dismissing the possibility of a reunion, she said it was "sadly a rumour".
Speaking to Irish station RTE Radio 1, she added: "All I can say is, if there was something to say on that front, [co-creator] James [Corden] and I would happily announce it, we would."
BBC Studios and Jones and Corden's respective production companies, Tidy Productions and Fulwell 73, have also offered no official confirmation of the festive episode.
Meanwhile, Steffan Rhodri, who plays Dave on the sitcom, has told BBC One's Morning Live that he had "no knowledge to impart.
"I've heard there was a rumour, I never know where they start and I certainly don't know where they'll end."
Starring Joanna Page, Mathew Horne, Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb, Rob Brydon, Jones and Corden, Gavin & Stacey's last Christmas special in 2019 was the UK's most-watched scripted TV programme of the 2010s, with 17.1 million viewers.
A report in yesterday Sun suggested that Netflix is trying to poach the sitcom from the BBC, quoting an anonymous source.
Netflix has denied the story. And Jones rubbished it to RTE, saying: "Apparently there's a bidding war going on between the BBC and Netflix and I love it because it says 'a source says'. Who is this source?"
