Still Open All Hours Series 7 cancelled by BBC One
- Still Open All Hours has been cancelled by the BBC after six series on air
- A seventh series had been delayed by coronavirus, and all plans have now been axed by the broadcaster
- Starring David Jason, the popular sitcom was a sequel to Open All Hours with Ronnie Barker
Sitcom Still Open All Hours has been cancelled, British Comedy Guide can exclusively report.
Written by Roy Clarke, the popular corner-shop comedy sequel has aired six series to date and had been due to return for a seventh, but plans have now been dropped after covid-related delays.
A BBC spokesperson confirmed to us: "There are currently no plans for new episodes of Still Open All Hours. We'd like to thank the cast and crew for six wonderful series, which are all available to view on BBC iPlayer."
Series 7 had been commissioned in 2019 but, as with dozens of other television programmes, production was put on hold when the coronavirus pandemic broke out early the following year.
As recently as September 2020, contrary to contemporary tabloid newspaper reports of the show's cancellation, the Corporation insisted the story was "100% not true", with "discussions on future episodes ongoing".
However, in the intervening time, and with both the show's executive producer Gareth Edwards, and Controller of Comedy Commissioning Shane Allen, having left the organisation, the series - one of British television's most popular modern comedies, with episodes reaching around 5 million viewers in overnight ratings alone - the commission has been reversed.
A sequel to 1973 - 1985 comedy Open All Hours, starring Ronnie Barker and David Jason, the series began with a one-off special to revisit the classic comedy's characters, broadcast at Christmas 2013. With more than 12 million viewers tuning in to watch the live broadcast, the huge success prompted the BBC to swiftly order a full series, the first of which averaged 6.6 million viewers per episode in overnight figures.
Still Open All Hours proved so successful that it overtook the hugely popular run of the original, charting 41 episodes over 6 series to Open All Hours' 26 episodes over 4 series.
The Complete Open All Hours - Series One - Four
Ronnie Barker stars as Arkwright, the tight-fisted stammering shop-keeper, who would rather risk instant amputation than replace his death-trap of a till. A young David Jason plays Granville, Arkwright's ill-fated, over-worked, sexually-frustrated errand boy, while Lynda Baron is Nurse Gladys Emmanuel, the owner of an awesome bosom and an old Morris Minor and is the object of the grocer's undying lust.
Contains the original 1973 pilot, and every episode from the four series of Open All Hours proper.

Still Open All Hours: The Story Of A Classic Comedy
From its first episode in 1973, Open All Hours was an instant hit. Audiences around Britain loved its familiar setting, good-natured humour, and the hilarious partnership of Ronnie Barker and David Jason. Whilst it only ran for 26 episodes, it firmly cemented itself as a British comedy classic.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the show in 2014, the BBC revived it for a one-off Christmas special. Still Open All Hours was swamped by a tsunami of audience affection and the BBC promptly commissioned a full series.
With recollections from David Jason, his fellow cast members, and from the scriptwriter Roy Clarke, plus never before seen BBC archive material, acclaimed popular TV historian Graham McCann tells the inside story of this very British sitcom, with wit, insight and affection.

Still Open All Hours - Series Three
Arkwright's, the nation's most loved convenience store once more opens its doors for a third time.
The series begins with a Christmas special where Granville (Sir David Jason) and Gastric (Tim Healy) find themselves playing marriage counsellors and Kath (Sally Lindsay) attempts to get everyone into the Christmas spirit.
Over the series viewers can count on seeing Granville find ever more ingenious ways to winkle out a small profit from his customers wherever he can. Granville's courtship of Mavis (Maggie Ollerenshaw) continues with more fish and chip dinners and trips out in Gastric's mini but he's got to keep an eye out for Mrs. Featherstone (Stephanie Cole) who is chasing down a fourth husband.
Meanwhile Granville's son, Leroy (James Baxter) is still trying to find a better mode of transport for his deliveries but that doesn't spoil his success with dating. Arch pessimist Eric (Johnny Vegas) is looking for improvements in his own married life, particularly when a mysterious woman is asking for him round the neighbourhood.
And love-sick Gastric, who's full of heart but less so of grey matter, is still trying to impress Mavis's formidable sister Madge (Brigit Forsyth).

Still Open All Hours - Series Five
The complete fifth series of the popular Sunday-evening sitcom, starring Sir David Jason as shopkeeper Granville Arkwright.
Granville still has his sights set on romance with Mavis, and Madge is giving Gastric more attention these days, but that could be because she's impressed with his invention skills.
The Black Widow is still keeping her options open in the pursuit of Granville and Mr Newbold. Does she have competition in the shape of Mrs Rossi? Meanwhile, Leroy attempts to get Beth to dump her childhood sweetheart and enlists her best friend Ruby to help with his plan. Eric and Cyril try to impress their wives when they try various sporting activities, but still find time to get in touch with their artistic side.
An oversized balloon wreaks havoc, and Arkwright's shop continues to offer more unlikely products and barmy schemes than you could shake a Yorkshire pudding at. And, of course, Arkwright still has to contend with the unpredictable snapping jaws of the till.
