Munya Chawawa pilots late night Channel 4 sketch show
- Munya Chawawa is piloting The Late Night Munyaverse, a sketch show for Channel 4
- The sketches are spun out of a spoof of the US late night talk show format, which he has called "a great template for me"
- The 2022 Taskmaster contestant is also embarking upon his debut live tour this year
Munya Chawawa is piloting a late night sketch show for Channel 4, British Comedy Guide can exclusively reveal.
With the working title The Late Night Munyaverse, BCG understands that the project is at an early stage of development but that the skits are spun out of spoofing a US-style, satirical late night talkshow.
Shot in London last month, the non-broadcast pilot consolidates Chawawa's burgeoning relationship with Channel 4, following his recent Taskmaster appearance, a documentary about growing up in Zimbabwe, How To Survive A Dictator, and his performance as Prince Charles in last week's Prince Andrew: The Musical, created by and starring Kieran Hodgson.
He also made the 2021 series Complaints Welcome with the broadcaster (pictured), in which he, Tom Allen and Jessica Knappett fielded viewers complaints about television.
Chawawa established his prolific reputation for topical sketches and characters such as TV chef Jonny Oliver and posh drill rapper Unknown P online. But he has become an increasingly familiar face on television and The Munyaverse also reunites him with Rumpus Media (Joe Lycett's Got Your Back, Rhod Gilbert's Growing Pains), who made the Zimbabwean documentary and the complaints series.
He outlined his dream of hosting a late-night talkshow in the style of Last Week Tonight's John Oliver or The Daily Show's Trevor Noah in a 2021 interview with The Observer, calling it "a great template for me".
He is also embarking upon his debut live tour this year, starting at the O2 Academy in Leicester on October 5th.
