ITV has cancelled its café set sitcom Kate & Koji after two series.

The studio-based comedy followed the working-class owner of an old-fashioned seaside café who forms an unexpected friendship with an African asylum seeker doctor.

Written by Outnumbered creators Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, it launched in March 2020 with stars Brenda Blethyn, Jimmy Akingbola, Blake Harrison and Barbara Flynn.

A second series followed in March 2022, with Okorie Chukwu taking over the role of Koji.

The news of the cancellation was first reported by The Mirror. An ITV spokesperson confirmed to British Comedy Guide: "We've loved having Kate & Koji on the channel but after two series there are currently no plans for a third. We would like to thank all the cast and crew for their hard work in bringing these characters alive on screen and in the studio in front of a live audience."

New sitcoms coming to ITV in 2023 include The Family Pile, which focuses on four sisters who have lost their parents and are packing up the family home to sell, and Changing Ends, an autobiographical sitcom by Alan Carr. However, none of the new sitcom commissions announced are studio audience shows.
