Sky's Spy recommissioned for extended run
Spy, the Sky1 sitcom starring Darren Boyd and Robert Lindsay, has been recommissioned for a second series.
The comedy, penned by Simeon Goulden, debuted on the satellite broadcaster's flagship channel in October. It focuses on Boyd's character, Tim, a slightly inept single father in the midst of a divorce and custody battle, who unwittingly finds himself in the employ of Her Majesty's secret services.
Achieving an average audience of almost 700,000 viewers, the Hat Trick produced Spy performed well in the station's Comedy Fridays line-up, and will return in 2012 for an hour-long Christmas special and ten 30-minute episodes.
The new series will follow Tim as a newly qualified agent as he continues to keep his secret from those closest to him and attempts to win the love of his son.
Sky Head of Comedy Lucy Lumsden said: "I am delighted by the response to Spy. Finding smart yet accessible pre-watershed comedy for adults and kids to watch together is a vital part of our story on Sky1. We couldn't have asked for a better start and are excited by the plans for the next series."
Executive Producer Jimmy Mulville adds: "Simeon Goulden has created a wonderfully crazy world populated with memorable characters all played beautifully by a supremely talented cast. We can't wait to get going on a second series."
This Friday will see Spy competing against more mainstream series in the British Comedy Awards. Darren Boyd has been nominated for the Best Comedy Actor award, whilst the series itself is a contender in the Best New Comedy category.
