Julia Davis is to return to Sky for her next comedy series.

The broadcaster, with US cable network HBO, has commissioned a seven-part series called Sally4Ever.

Davis has written and will direct the "story of a love affair that spirals quickly out of control".

Catherine Shepherd stars in the titular role of Sally, a woman in marketing who has lived "a comfortable and dull suburban life" with her partner, David (Alex Macqueen) for the past 10 years.

The broadcaster explains: "On the night David asks her to marry him, Sally has a crisis and embarks on a wild affair with Emma (Julia Davis), a seductive, charismatic, boho actress, singer, musician, poet and author. Before Sally knows it, Emma has moved in, rearranged the furniture and her life. Is this really what Sally wants, or has she made a mistake?"

To be broadcast on Sky One later this year, the series - made by Hush Ho and Various Artists Ltd - features "unique dark and esoteric characters". They promise: "It will explore the facets of love and sex in our confused, obsessive and gender-fluid world."

Also starring in the comedy will be Felicity Montagu, Joanna Scanlan, Mark Gatiss, and Davis's husband, Julian Barratt.

Macqueen and Davis previously co-starred together in the cult sitcom Hunderby on Sky Atlantic. Various Artists was founded last year by Peep Show writers Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong, whilst Hush Ho is Davis's own production outfit.

Julia Davis says: "I'm so excited to be making this project with Various Artists Ltd for Sky and HBO, and am incredibly lucky to be working with such an outstanding cast and receiving such great support and creative guidance from Sky and HBO."

Jon Mountague, head of Sky Comedy, adds: "They say never work with your heroines, balls to that Julia's as much fun to work with as her shows are to watch. Hunderby & Camping bear that out & her latest uniquely brilliant comic creation is genuinely breathtaking."

Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming, added: "We've been in comedy awe of Julia for many, many years. We're thrilled to be a part of her latest stroke of genius, and to be working alongside Sky One, Hush Ho and Various Artists in the process."
