BBC One is to pilot Doodlebugs, a family-friendly sketch show in which inanimate objects are turned into comedy characters with animation techniques.

BroadcastNow reports that a 30 minute pilot episode is being made by Electric Ray, the production company behind formats such as Car Jackers and game show Prized Apart.

The trade magazine explains the show "will see everyday objects brought to life using animation techniques over pre-existing, real world clips. It aims to turn inanimate objects such as eggs in a microwave or a production line manned by machines into comedy characters."

Producer Karl Warner from Electric Ray says: "We're thrilled to be making our first scripted project for BBC One. We've had the [camera] rig. We've had embedded crews. It's time for TV's next game changer: drawing faces on stuff."

BBC Comedy Commissioner Shane Allen comments: "This is one of those wholly original ideas that sounds a bit dodgy on paper, so you need to see it to get how joyfully daft and wonderful it is. One of those rare treats for all the family which could only have come from the child-like mind of Karl Warner and his team of merry lunatics."

Doodlebugs will be shown in a teatime slot on BBC One in 2017.
