Two Doors Down Series 3 ordered
- Two Doors Down will be back in 2017 for a third series
- The cast will return for more neighbourly and familial angst in suburban Scotland
- Series 2 finishes tonight with a double-bill on BBC Two from 10pm
Having broadcast its first series only earlier this year, the BBC has ordered a third series of sitcom Two Doors Down.
An initial one-off episode was shown on New Year's Eve 2013, proving popular enough to warrant a series commission. The first series was broadcast during April and May this year, whilst Series 2 has been on air since November and will conclude tonight with a double-bill.
The series is focused on the lives of Eric and Beth, a middle-aged married couple living in suburban Scotland, and the neighbours who regularly impose upon them.
Alex Norton and Arabella Weir star as the central couple, with Doon Mackichan and Jonathan Watson as highly-strung neighbour Cathy and her husband, Colin; plus Elaine C. Smith as the much poorer single-mum Christine and Sharon Rooney as her adult daughter, Sophie.
The regulars are joined by Eric and Beth's gay son, Ian (Jamie Quinn), and his partner, Jaz (Harki Bhambra).
The BBC says: "A third series of Two Doors Down will be filmed next year, following two hugely successful runs in just eight months.
"Exploring the best and worst of family life, the sitcom follows the residents of Latimer Crescent as they navigate the trials and tribulations of suburban life. The show will return to BBC Two in 2017 after being well received by audiences across the UK."
According to a press release, Series 2 has been attracting double the average number of viewers for its timeslot in Scotland, and around a million viewers per episode across the UK, in overnight figures.
Shane Allen, Controller of Comedy Commissioning for the corporation, said: "This deftly drawn world has gone from strength to strength thanks to the rich comic dialogue and colourful characters who the audience has taken to its heart. Scottish scripted comedy is outstanding right now. Still Game had such a phenomenal return in return in 2016 and the recommissioning of Two Doors Down is another high point on which to close the year."
Two Doors Down is written by BBC comedy executive Gregor Sharp and Simon Carlyle and executive produced by Steven Canny. Canny says: "We are overjoyed to be heading back to Latimer Crescent next year. The quality of the writing, the wonderful cast and the extraordinary skill of the production team make this show a rare treat for us and we're very happy that the audience seem to feel the same."
He adds: "If you're very lucky, you get the chance to make a show like this once in your lifetime so to be hitting a third series so quickly is a real blessing."
Ewan Angus, Commissioning Editor, Television, BBC Scotland, said: "Two Doors Down is a brilliantly funny comedy and it's a great tribute to the writers and the wonderful cast that it's been recommissioned so quickly."
Series 3 will again consist of six 30-minute episodes. Series 2 concludes tonight (Monday 19th December 2016) with the final two episodes of the series on BBC Two from 10pm.
