A new sketch from Peter Kay's sitcom Car Share will be broadcast on Christmas Eve.

The Mirror reports that the clip will be included as part of the new Christmas special episode of Peter Kay's Comedy Shuffle, the show in which highlights from the comedian's career are broadcast.

The newspaper says: "Peter's man behind the wheel, John, and work colleague Kayleigh, played by Sian Gibson, are slipping back into the Fiat 500 to provide some of their banter in a segment on Peter Kay's Comedy Shuffle being aired on Christmas Eve on BBC One."

A source comments: "Peter has been trying to keep it a secret but there will be a Car Share clip of around three minutes. It will keep fans who were begging for a full Christmas special happy until the second series starts next year.

"It's the perfect Christmas gift for viewers as John turns to Kayleigh and asks why there are Christmas songs playing in the middle of the summer on the radio. Even though it's only short, it's a hilarious sketch."

Kay has previously spoken about filming a clip for the episode at a charity Q&A. The new scene will be set in daylight. Last year the star explained why it would be hard to do a Christmas special of the show: "Because we drive around a lot we need to shoot it in May/June. People say why don't you do a Christmas special? The problem is it goes dark at half seven. You can't really drive around in the dark.

"It's really difficult to light the inside of the car, it's very boring and technical, but driving around in May and June it doesn't go dark until 10 o'clock at night so you can film until about 8 o'clock y'see. And really, the whole show is set outdoors but in a car, so we need as much daylight as we can get."

The 45 minute Peter Kay's Christmas Comedy Shuffle episode will also feature festive highlights from Phoenix Nights and a scene in which his short-lived character Geraldine sings with Paul McCartney.

The BAFTA-winning Car Share was watched by millions in April 2015, however there has been a long wait for the second series. As previously reported, four new episodes are in production for 2017.

Speaking at the time of the commission, the BBC said: "Series 1 climaxed with a 'will they won't they' pivotal moment between John and Kayleigh as their chemistry grew and it looked like romance was on the cards. The soundtrack to their friendship (courtesy of fictional local radio station Forever FM) was sealed with a mix CD from Kayleigh to John, but what will become of their blossoming relationship?"

Peter Kay himself said: "What a joy to be working on the second series of Car Share with the wonderful Sian Gibson. The success of the first series has been completely overwhelming."

Peter Kay's Christmas Comedy Shuffle will be on BBC One on Saturday 24th December at 10:05pm. Series 2 of Car Share will be on BBC One later in 2017.
