- Noel Fielding is to host a TV show in which comedians take on Japanese gameshow formats
- The Channel 4 programme will also look at bizarre news, adverts, products and inventions from Japan
- Only In Japan is due to be recorded on Sunday 5th June, for broadcast on Channel 4 later this year
Noel Fielding is to host a Channel 4 show which will look at the "popular culture of Japan and the weird and wonderful world of Japanese gameshows".
The format - provisionally titled Only In Japan - will see two teams comprising of "top comedians and big name celebrities" taking on "fantastical and hugely enjoyable Japanese games".
Channel 4 explains: "Presented by Noel Fielding, this brand new studio show will offer a look at popular culture in Japan and, in particular, the weird and wonderful world of Japanese gameshows. They're big in Japan, but could any of them take off over here?
"Japanese pop culture is one of the most distinct modern day cultures in the world. Noel will explore the news, adverts, products and inventions from the land of the rising sun - from the slightly unusual to the downright bizarre.
"Once he has got a feel for this remarkable society, Noel will challenge two teams of famous faces to compete in rounds from often peculiar but always fun Japanese gameshows, all in a bid to win the honour of becoming champions. Will these Japanese games take off here or will they get lost in translation?"
The one-off hour long show, which is being produced by Rumpus Media, will be recorded in front of a studio audience on Sunday 5th June in MediaCity, Salford. To apply to be in the audience visit SRO Tickets.
The production team promises: "It's going to be fun and entertaining and we would love for you to join us on a voyage of discovery!"
Fielding, who is reportedly set to reunite with his Mighty Boosh co-star Julian Barratt to work on new ideas, has recently been recording episodes of Radio 4 panel show The Museum Of Curiosity. He is acting as the show's latest 'curator', presenting alongside host John Lloyd. The series is expected to be broadcast on Radio 4 in July.
No details have yet been revealed about the broadcast date for Only In Japan, but it is expected to be shown on TV later in the year.
