Catastrophe and Chewing Gum both win multiple RTS Awards

  • Chewing Gum creator Michaela Coel took home the Breakthrough and Comedy Performance prizes

RTS Awards

Catastrophe and Chewing Gum were amongst the TV show winners at the Royal Television Society awards tonight.

Channel 4 sitcom Catastrophe picked up the prize for Best Scripted Comedy, with creators Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan also honoured for their writing work on the show.

Meanwhile Michaela Coel, the creator of E4's Chewing Gum, picked up prizes in the Breakthrough and Comedy Performance categories.

The RTS Awards are held to "honour excellence across all genres of television programming and recognise exceptional actors, presenters, writers and production teams as well as the programmes themselves".

The winners were announced at a ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel tonight (Tuesday 22nd March 2016).

Elsewhere in the list of winners, Channel 4 comedy drama No Offence picked up the award for Best Drama Series. However, The Graham Norton Show and The Last Leg lost out to Release The Hounds in the Entertainment category.

Lenny Henry was awarded a surprise fellowship for his work raising awareness of diversity in the industry. This was in addition to the Judges' Award in recognition of his commitment to increasing minority representation.

BAFTA Craft nominees

Also announced today were the nominees for the BAFTA Craft Awards, with Catastrophe in the running for the writers award and the show's director, Ben Taylor, up for the directing award. Meanwhile Michaela Coel is nominated in the BAFTA Craft Breakthrough category.

The comedy writing category in full is: Peter Kay's Car Share (Peter Kay, Paul Coleman, Sian Gibson), Hunderby (Julia Davis, Barunka O'Shaughnessy), Peep Show (Jesse Armstrong, Sam Bain), and Catastrophe (Rob Delaney, Sharon Horgan).

The breakthrough category nominees in full are: Guillem Morales (Inside No. 9 director); DC Moore (Not Safe For Work writer), Marcus Plowright (Muslim Drag Queens producer), and Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum creator).
