Citizen Khan to return for Series 5
- BBC One has ordered a fifth series of Citizen Khan
- The new series will see the Khan family 'in a state of flux'
- Series 5 will be filmed and broadcast later in 2016
Citizen Khan is to return for a fifth series.
BBC One has ordered another run of the family-based sitcom in which Adil Ray plays self-appointed community leader Mr Khan. Series 4, which was broadcast from October to December last year, attracted audiences of between 2 and 3 million an episode.
The BBC confirms: "The new series will see creator Adil Ray return to the title role alongside Shobu Kapoor, who plays Mrs Khan; Krupa Pattani and Bhavna Limbachia, who play daughters Shazia and Alia; and Abdullah Afzal, who plays Shazia's husband, Amjad.
The new series, which will be filmed in Birmingham and Salford later this year, will see the Khan family in a state of flux. Amjad is finally a proper policeman as he and Shazia are about to become parents for the second time. Meanwhile Alia is thinking of leaving home, either by going to college or finally achieving her dream of Instagram superstardom.
Also Mrs Khan is facing up to the prospect of an empty nest and wondering if she and her husband will have anything in common anymore. Meanwhile, Mr Khan himself is blissfully unaware of any clouds on the horizon as he is far too busy being an "entrepreneur, community leader and surely soon the next president of the Sparkhill Pakistani Business Association". After all, they all know him.
Adil Ray says: "I'm so grateful to the British television public who really have taken the Khans to their hearts. You don't get to a fifth series without their love and support and of course the brilliant cast, co-writers and production team. My mum's so pleased she's bringing out the Royal Albert dinner set this weekend."
BBC commissioner Shane Allen adds: "The irrepressible Mr Khan and his family return with their refreshing comic slice of British Asian family life. It's a testament to Adil's wonderful creation and the writing team that there's lots more comedy chaos and adventures ahead. It's grown to become a firm BBC One audience favourite in a mainstream family-friendly slot."
The new series will be shown on BBC One towards the end of the year.
