  • Six more episodes of Boy Meets Girl will be filmed from February
  • The BBC calls the show 'an incredibly important comedy'
  • Storylines in Series 2 will include Leo getting a job and Judy befriending a young transgender man

BBC Two has ordered a second series of Boy Meets Girl, the sitcom about a love affair between an older transgender woman and a younger male.

It had been reported that the BBC had ordered another run of the comedy when Series 1 finished in October, but the news has only now been officially confirmed. The first series achieved good ratings and widespread praise from viewers and critics.

Six more episodes are due to go into production in Manchester from this February, with key cast members Rebecca Root, Harry Hepple, Denise Welch, Nigel Betts, Jonny Dixon, Janine Duvitski and Lizzie Roper all set to return.

BBC Two controller Kim Shillinglaw says: "Comedy is central to BBC Two's DNA and I want the channel to be a place where writers and creatives can do their most distinctive work.

"Boy Meets Girl was created from the heart and I'm so pleased that Elliott Kerrigan, Simon Carlyle and all the team behind this fabulous series are returning for another one. Boy Meets Girl ventured into territory that classic sitcom has never seen before in Britain but did it with a warmth and an authenticity that BBC Two viewers really responded to and I can't wait to see what happens next for Judy, Leo and all the other wonderful cast of characters."

Shane Allen, BBC Controller of Comedy Commissioning, comments of the recommission: "This series demonstrates comedy's unique ability to bring insight, warmth and understanding to challenging subjects and encapsulates the three bedrocks of the BBC's duty to inform, educate and entertain. A welcome return for this warm-hearted love story with a twist. Expect lots more out and out bawdy comedy alongside some very tender and touching moments in this very modern take on a rom-com."

By the end of the first series the central characters of Judy and Leo had won the support of both their families and had declared their enduring love for one another.

The BBC says of the next chapter of their story: "In Series 2 viewers will see them navigate their relationship through new choppy waters. It's not easy getting to really know another person when you don't have a place of your own!

"Judy will befriend a young transgender man and Leo will embrace the world of work. Tony will have to decide how to spend his redundancy money and Jackie will discover love. Pam and Peggy will compete to see who can be the most supportive mother and James might just have to find a job! Last time Leo proposed to Judy she laughed at the very idea. Will he ever find the courage to try again?"

Kristian Smith from the BBC says: "Following the overwhelmingly joyous response to Series 1, the team have worked tirelessly to develop Series 2 of this incredibly important comedy. Boy Meets Girl returns exploring all the new comic turns in Leo and Judy's romance; we will see some surprising shifts in some of their family members as attitudes and circumstances have changed since we last saw them. This year, we will also explore a whole new Trans experience."

Series 2 of Boy Meets Girl will be shown on BBC Two later this year.
