The BBC is to air Peter Kay's Comedy Shuffle, a new series celebrating Peter Kay's work.

The six part BBC One series will follow on from Peter Kay: 20 Years Of Funny, a documentary broadcast at Christmas in which the stand-up and actor talked about his career.

The new show is seen by some as a way of helping to cement Kay as a BBC star rather than a Channel 4 comedian, with his two current TV projects - Car Share and Cradle To Grave - both on the BBC.

Previously, Channel 4 broadcast documentaries such as Peter Kay - In Conversation and Peter Kay's Top 43 Greatest Comedy Moments.

The BBC says the new series gives viewers the chance to "celebrate and re-discover" some of Kay's best work.

The Corporation says: "From the creation of popular TV classics such as Phoenix Nights, Britain's Got The Pop Factor and Max & Paddy's Road To Nowhere, to his sold-out and critically acclaimed stand-up tours, the series will feature highlights from his numerous TV and chat show appearances and his record-breaking music videos including (Is This The Way To) Amarillo, as well as an assortment of unseen gems and hilarious out-takes from the last two decades."

Peter Kay says: "I was completely overwhelmed by the response to 20 Years of Funny and I feel honoured that the BBC would like to take a further look back at my career so far. I'm also delighted to still be working after twenty years at a job I still love."

BBC commissioner Shane Allen says: "2015 marked an incredible year for Peter between Phoenix Nights Live, Car Share and Cradle To Grave, and this is a great treat for the audience to enjoy a career highlights format while they wait for Car Share 2 to park up. Peter's notched up a lot of live and TV shows over the last two decades which have become modern classics and deserve to be enjoyed all over again in this new way."

BBC executive Charlotte Moore adds: "Peter Kay is a comic genius that brought such joy to BBC One viewers last year. I'm thrilled that he is bringing his new series to the channel."

Peter Kay's Comedy Shuffle will be broadcast later this year. Both Car Share and Cradle To Grave are expected to return later this year too.
