- New series would be a sequel
- The series would begin 6 years after Lee & Lucy's wedding
Lee Mack has for the first time publicly confirmed plans for a Not Going Out sequel.
Appearing on magazine programme The One Show to promote his new live DVD collection and the Not Going Out Christmas special, he explained:
"We are now talking about a possible new series where we will be doing the more family stuff."
A 2014 Christmas special saw Lee and landlady Lucy (Sally Bretton) marry after 6 series of a will-they-won't-they relationship between the pair.
Lee went on to clarify: "Nothing's been confirmed yet for a new series, he says diplomatically.
"I've already written the first episode in case it happens. And it is quite weird writing about family life. We've slowed it down a bit, less jokes and more childrens' nappies."
He added: "We're talking about cutting to 5 years from now and having a family with lots of children. That's how we're thinking of doing it - not that it's confirmed."
Speaking to hosts Alex Jones and Matt Baker, Lee was keen to stress that the project is still in development with his production company, Arlo, and Avalon Television, and has not as yet been confirmed by the BBC.
Mack also joked: "Nothing's been confirmed yet for a new series, but when it happens - and it starts in July..."
Fellow guest Olly Murs was then asked about his friendship with X Factor co-host Caroline Flack and constant will-they-won't-they media speculation about their relationship, Lee quipped "Will they?", to which Olly replied: "I dunno, we'll see - put a show together."
Mack responded: "HA! I'm struggling to write my own sitcom; I'm not writing one for you."
In an interview with British Comedy Guide published this Summer, Lee discussed audiences adapting to change in sitcoms.
He said: "The dilemma is always that people don't like change. It's very hard and, trust me, I know because we've been through a fuck load of cast changes. I'm an expert on change now!
"It is something that's ordinary. Your brain is changing as you're watching it and you're getting used to it. That's all it is.
"I've had to come to terms with this. Miranda left, Tim's left... so we're used to that change. It's taken me all these years just to suss out how people's brains work when they're watching things..."
The 2015 Not Going Out Christmas special will be broadcast on Christmas Eve at 10:45pm on BBC One.
