- E4 has ordered another series of Chewing Gum
- Michaela Coel is writing six new episodes
- The episodes will be filmed and broadcast in 2016
Chewing Gum has been given a second series.
Channel 4 has confirmed that the new sitcom has been picked up for a second series for E4.
Written by and starring Michaela Coel, the show - which has been adapted from her 2012 National Theatre stage play - follows the story of Tracey, a 22-year-old who is fast finding out that the more she learns about the world, the less she understands.
The first series, which was broadcast in October and November on Tuesday nights received widespread praise, with the press also noting that the programme didn't shy away from tackling subjects like sex head on.
Coel is now writing six new episodes. She says: "The love and support for my Chewing Gum baby has been overwhelming and I can't wait to get started on the second series. All I've got to do now is write it."
Rachel Springett from Channel 4 comments: "Michaela is a rare and exceptional talent; it has been inspirational to work with her on her first TV series and to see how incredibly multi-talented and fresh her viewpoint is, it's extraordinary. We are thrilled to be working with her again on this second series.
Executive Producer Jon Rolph adds: "Michaela's talent and honesty shine from every word on the page and every shot on the screen. I'm delighted that we'll get to see more of Tracey and her glorious, unstoppable journey."
Talking in an interview ahead of the first series, Coel explained: " I wrote based on the life I've lived, which I guess isn't a life you see very often on TV. It's based on real people, my life, school, friends. I wasn't trying to do something no one's ever done."
Series 2 of Chewing Gum will be filmed and broadcast in 2016.
