Hugh Dennis is to host a new panel show format, The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread.

The programme, which is in the early stages of development, will see the Outnumbered and Now Show star asking guests to answer the question "What is the best thing since sliced bread?"

The producer's notes say: "Our three guests will provide their own answer to that question, arguing their cases with wit and vigour. They'll deliver a very short monologue on why their nomination is the best thing since sliced bread (which first appeared on July 7th 1928, by the way), after which Hugh and the other two guests will cross swords with them in debate.

"At the end of the programme Hugh will choose a winner. Not that that matters that much - it's entertainment we're after here, not scientific rigour."

Talking further about the format, the producers explain: "The guests can nominate anything - animal, vegetable, mineral, real, fictional or metaphysical - anything in fact, that they have an enthusiasm for.

"They might choose Ian Botham, the sat-nav, Brief Encounter, Valerie Singleton, the Rubik's Cube, the moon landings, Pop Tarts, penicillin, Britney Spears, nylon, the QVC shopping channel... But they could not choose Bruce Forsyth. Because Bruce Forsyth is five months older than sliced bread."

A trial run through of the format has been organised at The Museum Of Comedy in London on Tuesday 8th December. To apply to be in the audience see our free tickets page
