W1A looks set to return for a third series.

The satire of BBC management has run for two series to date, spinning off from Olympics-planning sitcom Twenty Twelve.

With the BBC facing the renewal of its Royal Charter next year, there had been worries from some that the show would prove too politically sensitive to continue during the process of negotiation with the Government. However, BBC Two Controller Kim Shillinglaw has told the Radio Times website that is not the case.

She said: "It's all about the writer. When John Morton's ready we will be ready."

Describing the show as "gorgeous", "sharp", and "very funny", Shillinglaw also told the website that the production of a potential Series 3 would depend on the schedules of the show's in-demand stars, notably Hugh Bonneville, Jessica Hynes and Sarah Parish.

When Series 2 finished in May, writer John Morton said that he would be keen to set a third series against the backdrop of charter renewal.

"It will put pressure on our characters in the fictional world which will be helpful. The show will never take a position, but W1A is written from a place where I certainly hope things turn out OK for the BBC."

He explained: "I think most people think about the BBC how you do about your parents. You don't choose them and they may drive you mad occasionally, but you would be devastated if they weren't there."

Kim Shillinglaw also confirmed previous reports that plans are in progress for a third series of Inside No. 9, and that she hopes to order a second series of transgender-focused sitcom Boy Meets Girl.
