Channel 4 has announced that David Schwimmer will co-star in new sitcom Morning Has Broken.

Created by Julia Davis, who is co-writing the series with Nick Mohammed, Morning Has Broken will follow breakfast TV host Gail Sinclair, who has a breakdown following her show's declining ratings.

Schwimmer, loved around the world for his role as Ross in the long-running, smash-hit US sitcom Friends, has been cast as an American producer brought in by channel executives to refresh and boost Good Morning... with Gail Sinclair's viewing figures.

Davis stars in the series as Gail Sinclair, whilst Mohammed plays one of her co-hosts on the programme.

Channel 4 explain: "After eight glorious years of high ratings and winning awards, things begin to go wrong for Sinclair when the programme begins to lose viewers and tensions break out within the production team."

Produced by Gary Reich at Brown Eyed Boy, the series is due to be directed by How Not To Live Your Life's Dan Clark, and will be broadcast during 2016.

In a statement released by Channel 4 today, Julia Davis said she is "looking forward to experimenting with friends whose work I love".

David Schwimmer added: "I've been a massive fan of Julia's for years, and I'm thrilled to be able to finally work with her and Nick on this fantastic comedy."

Rachel Springett, Commissioning Editor for Comedy at Channel 4 says: "Julia is undoubtedly one of our most talented comedic writers and actresses and it's a testament to the quality of her writing that she can attract such a big star. We are thrilled to have David Schwimmer star alongside Julia in this exciting new series for the channel."

Gary Reich adds: "I'm hugely excited and grateful to finally be working with talent I've been a fan of for most of my career doing a project that will push the boundaries of how we make comedy."

Julia Davis's dark Sky Atlantic comedy Hunderby, meanwhile, is due to conclude with a two-part Christmas special later this year.
