Comedian Jason Cook has confirmed that his BBC Two sitcom, Hebburn, will not be renewed for a third series.

In a post shared on Twitter, the stand-up comic and writer said: "Just so everyone knows, the BBC will not be renewing Hebburn for a third series. We've had such a great time making Series 1 and 2 and I'd like to thank the BBC for allowing us to do this."

The series launched in Autumn 2012, starring Chris Ramsey and Kimberley Nixon as Jack and Sarah Pearson, a young newlywed couple who are forced by a mixture of family, economic, and work circumstances to move into his parents' home in Hebburn, on the banks of the Tyne in north-east England.

The sitcom focused on the Pearson family and their friends in the local Hebburn community, with Vic Reeves and Gina McKee playing Jack's parents, and Lisa McGrillis as his sister, Vicki.

Cook, who also played Jack's long-term best friend Ramsey, continued: "The team that made Hebburn were so committed to it and those both in front of and behind the camera were what made Hebburn so special.

"It was such an honour to be able to put my little hometown on TV and to show the country and little bit of tyneside with some of the best actors I could ever have dreamed of. The response from fans all over the world has been overwhelming with Hebburn being shown in Australia, Canada, America and all over Europe. But now we have to move on to new projects and I'm looking forward to doing more stuff with the Hebburn team as soon as possible!"

Series 1 attracted an average overnight audience of 1.24 million viewers, whilst Series 2 averaged 1.87 million.

The first series picked up the public-voted Best New TV Sitcom title in the Comedy.co.uk Awards 2012, and a second series was broadcast in Autumn 2013, followed by a Christmas special. Hebburn was a co-production between Channel X and Baby Cow Productions.

Here are two clips from the first episode of the sitcom, in which Sarah meets Jack's family for the first time, having impulsively married whilst holidaying in Las Vegas:
