Donna has reached a crossroads in her life. A feisty single mother of two young daughters (Shirley and Rhiannon), she is torn between devoting all her time to their well-being, finding a new man and building her career as a nurse.

Regrettably those around her don't seem to be of much help, from patronizing neighbour Marina and her eco-warrior husband Alan to her two suitors, Lawrie (a paramedic) and Roger (a doctor). Phil is the bad-penny husband Donna has thrown out.

In the second series, Lawrie has disappeared and Donna has temporarily plumped for Roger, although she finds herself outshone by Phil's new trendy girlfriend, Gail.
