Further details
In this penultimate episode of the series, the fishing takes place on the incredible tidal outcrop of Burgh Island on the south coast of Devon, where the quarry is Wrasse.
The first day of fishing commences as they travel from the mainland of South Devon but their mode of transport is a little different to what you would expect! As Paul arrives on the island, Bob kickstarts their trip with a huge surprise for Paul [he has serious health problems, and Lee Mack is stepping in to take his place for the episode].
Burgh Island has plenty of fishing spots to offer; there are rocks to stand on and cast a line into the water, a sandbar to wade out to at low tide, and also fishing by boat. For this trip, their success will be dependent on the tide and water level - within hours the beach is covered, and the island is cut off from the mainland, so every minute counts.
Wrasse inhabit shallow, rocky areas such as the shoreline found on Burgh Island. They use their incredibly strong teeth to pull molluscs and barnacles off the rocks, before extra teeth in their throats help to crush the shells. They are considered a hard fighting fish.
Keen to test the surrounding waters, Paul walks down to the beach but is met with an unexpected but familiar face. For this trip, Paul also comes face to face with a rather unconventional fishing approach - will he be tempted to stray from his tried and tested methods?
As they journey to see what the island has to offer, they take a moment to have a healthy vegan lunch and bask in the surrounding landscape. Paul wanders down to where the calm waves meet the island cliffs, continuing his pursuit of wrasse.
With much of the island still left to explore, they decide to venture to the accommodation - a beautiful beach house that is steeped in history. Agatha Christie wrote several of her novels here, illustrated by the old typewriter on the desk. Our intrepid fishers are not the only well-known faces to have stayed on the island, as the Beatles and Noel Coward also spent quality time here.
As the day comes to an end, Paul and Bob catch up on the surprise filled day.
The next morning, the sun beats down and having laid out the plan for the day with Bob, Paul travels further out into the sea to try his luck at boat fishing. Meanwhile, at the top of this hilly island, Ted takes the lead on a kite flying expedition with limited success.
With the fishing trip drawing to a close, Paul, Bob and terrier Ted take a moment to look out from the island. They round off their successes and Paul gives his verdict on welcoming all things new and different.
