Throughout the fifties and sixties Arthur Haynes was one of the biggest names in entertainment, regularly occupying ITV's primetime Saturday night slot. While many of his contemporaries are now regarded as legends Arthur has somehow been forgotten.
With sketches written by Johnny Speight, and ably assisted by his straight man Nicholas Parsons, Arthur's sketch shows were must watch TV appointments for the whole family. The shows also featured musical guest appearances including one of the Rolling Stones first broadcasts.
Paul Merton talks to Nicholas Parsons about what it was like to work with Arthur.
