Further details

Hilary is seeing more and more of Miss Flood's nephew Anthony, or Tone as she calls him. Miss Flood is desperate to try and keep the two apart. She tries dropping hints that Derek is more suitable for her but Hilary is smitten.

Alec meanwhile is expecting a visit for his brother in law Jean-Claude from France. Zoë is very nervous of meeting him especially when Simone, in her usual insensitive way, sings her late mother Jenny's praises on how domesticated she was. Zoë insists that Alec call the visit off.

Alec smells a rat and is furious when he finds out what Simone has done. He decides to tell Zoë he's put Jean-Claude off when in fact he hasn't so that way Jean-Claude can see Zoë as Zoë and not be comparing her to Jenny. Alec is late home that night however because of a disturbance involving Hilary, Anthony and Derek. Hilary announces she has split with Derek for good and she wants to be with Anthony. Miss Flood is mortified.

When Alec arrives home he confesses to Zoë what he's done but Zoë already knows as Jean-Claude has phoned to say he's been delayed. Alec is surprised but relived that Zoë isn't angry with him because she realises what Alec was trying to do.
