Zoë has decided that now her divorce has come through it's time to make some changes, like finally learning to drive. Alec decides that rather than her wasting money on an instructor he will teach her himself. This turns out to be a huge mistake as Alec's teaching methods prove to be patronising to say the least and Zoë is far from being a natural driver!

At the office meanwhile Alec is somewhat surprised when a manuscript arrives addressed to a Miss Elvira Storm. Alec is soon engrossed in the novel. Hilary meanwhile is more engrossed in finding out more about the strange man whom Miss Flood has been talking on the phone to so often. The mystery man turns out to be a publisher who has published the book Alec has been reading. Alec soon makes the connection between Elvira Storm and Vera Flood.

Alec decides that teaching Zoë to drive is putting too much strain on their relationship so he asks a favour of a client of his who is a driving instructor. On Zoë's birthday he arrives at her flat with a cake shaped like a steering wheel and takes her downstairs to show her his present a course of lessons.
