One of Clifford's duties is to appoint a vicar of the parish of Little Clogborough-in-the-Marsh. He is finding it impossible to chose a candidate and calls upon the help of Bodkin - but his head has been turned by the stipend of £2,000 a year and may not be an unbiased judge after all.
