Have I Got News For You. Diane Morgan
Diane Morgan guest hosts for the first time, as the panels dissect the coronation of King Charles and the UK's local election results. Ian and Paul are joined by comedian Desiree Burch and Times Radio presenter Matt Chorley.

Further details

On being booked to guest host the show, Diane Morgan said: "It's a real honour to be presenting Have I Got News For You. But I learned everything about the news from Philomena Cunk, so I hope someone tells me when someone gets the right answer."

There was lots to discuss in this edition following the coronation of King Charles last weekend, with arrests to anti-monarchist protesters being criticised, praise for Penny Mordaunt's sword-carrying, and the king travelling in 'uncomfortable' gold carriages.

"What was the main hiccup to proceedings?" asked host Diane Morgan.

"Charles was there early, and I believe the Prince and Princess of Wales were slightly late, so Charles was stuck in the gold coach... just going round and round the block" joked Ian Hislop.

"The coach he went there in was the good one that had aircon and electric windows. But there was all this stuff about the gold coach he went back to the palace in being very basic," said Matt Chorley.

"Yeah, it's so uncomfortable to be encased in gold and pulled by horses," laughed Desiree Burch.

"Yeah, he should have got the tube!" joked Chorley.

"Who stole the show?" asked Morgan.

"Penny Mordaunt - she was carrying the sword of state and I interviewed her about it beforehand. She told me she'd been doing press ups and I thought 'this is a lot of fuss, she's not going to be in it very much'. She was in it more than the king!" replied Chorley.

"Myself, I would have prepared for carrying the sword by... carrying a sword," joked Paul Merton.

"You can't rule out the possibility if Liz Truss has done it she would have put the sword in her foot... and then beheaded the king!" quipped Chorley.

"...and then say she'd done nothing wrong," laughed Hislop.

"King Charles has been criticised for the opulence of the coronation, during a cost of living crisis. To be fair, cut backs had been made... he was only wearing one glove," joked Diane Morgan, continuing:

"The Royal Family did their best to make the coronation a celebration of diversity. Yes, the family are pretty white, but many of the jewels that they wore were stolen from Africa and India."

"Rishi Sunak arrived with his wife for the ceremony. An event she later described as 'small, but nice'."

Later in the episode, Morgan turned the panel's attention to this week's aftermath of the local election results, in which the Conservatives lost more seats than they themselves had predicted.

"It's good news for Keir Starmer, he's now on course... for something. But he wouldn't discuss a coalition with the Lib Dems," said Matt Chorley.

"Then the Conservatives got very very cross and said 'this is disgraceful, how can you run a country in coalition with the Lib Dems!' It's the Lib Dems big moment, I don't know why everyone's not more excited," replied Hislop.

"Are you excited about Ed Davey, Diane?" Chorley asked.

"Oh yeah, look at me. I'm beside myself..." Morgan replied, straight-faced, before continuing, "Conservative MP Craig Mackinlay was adamant that there are still Tory voters out there, saying the problem is 'not the Conservative switchers, but the Conservative stay-at-homers'. That's according to one of the Conservative 'clutching-at-straw-ers'."

Notes

Paul and Desiree won, 6 points to 3.
