The former Grace Bros. staff adjust to country life as proprietors of a manor house and farm in the quiet country town of Great Tender (just north of Tender Bottom).

After Young Mr. Grace dies in an unfortunate scuba-diving incident, the staff of Grace Bros. find that their pension fund has been unwisely invested in a country manor house, currently operating as a hotel. With no other option, Mr. Humphries, Mrs. Slocombe, Captain Peacock and Miss Brahms reluctantly team up with the hotel's manager, Mr. Rumbold, and attempt to turn the hotel into a profitable business venture.

They are joined by Miss Lovelock, Mr Grace's last nurse and executor of his estate; farmer Maurice Moulterd; and his lovely daughter, Mavis.
