Mickey Noades is a 36-year-old waster who has never made anything of his life. For a living, he gambles and does a spot of wheeling and dealing, spending much of his time in Ron Palmer's pub, The Crown & Sceptre, where his girlfriend, Tina, is a barmaid.
When Tina's young brother, Mo, arrives from jobless Liverpool, Mickey makes him less than welcome, until he realizes that Mo is an exceptional snooker player.
With plenty of money to be made from hustling in London's snooker halls, Mickey sees his life opening up before him and his "big break" just around the corner.
