Mitchell & Webb sitcom Back to be adapted by HBO
Back, the 2017 to 2021 Channel 4 sitcom starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb, is set to be re-made for American audiences by HBO.
Executive producer Kenton Allen confirmed the plans in an interview with Deadline.
The trade publication notes: "Back writer Simon Blackwell is working on the HBO adaptation, which is yet to be greenlit."
The comedy launched in 2017 as a six-part series. It focused on Stephen (played by Mitchell) whose father, a local legend and pub landlord, has died. Thus Stephen is set to - finally - take over the pub. However, when the charming Andrew (Webb) turns up out of the blue at his dad's funeral claiming to be his estranged foster brother, Stephen's plans go awry.
A second series was ordered, however with Webb requiring heart surgery, filming was delayed. It eventually appear on Channel 4 in 2021.
Kenton Allen also revealed his production company Big Talk was talking to US networks about adapting Mum, the 2016 to 2019 BBC Two comedy starring Lesley Manville; plus We Are Not Alone, the one-off 2022 sci-fi comedy created by Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond.
Rickard and Willbond are now working on In Case Of Emergency, an animated comedy for Netflix set in a British hospital. Big Talk is also working on making a UK version of his US sitcom Cheers.
