Motherland to be remade in the US
The Disney-owned major US broadcasting network ABC is to pilot an adaptation of Motherland, according to reports.
The sitcom, which has run for 20 episodes across BBC Two and BBC One since 2016, follows a group of parents struggling with life, work, childcare, relationships and the school run.
Production is lead by Merman Television, the company founded by Sharon Horgan, who also co-created the comedy with Helen Serafinowicz, Holly Walsh and Graham Linehan. Barunka O'Shaughnessy has latterly replaced Linehan on the regular writing team, with Horgan also stepping back for the third series and 2022 Christmas special due to her other commitments.
American trade publication Variety reports that the network "is close to signing a pilot order" to trial the remake.
Meanwhile trade website Deadline reports that ABC is in negotiations with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star Ellie Kemper to take a lead role of Julia in the show. Karan Soni (Deadpool) will also appear in the pilot as Calvin, the character called Kevin in the British version.
Julieanne Smolinski (Home Economics) is adapting the script with Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) set to direct.
