Hapless Ralph West works in an office where petty squabbles and rivalries are part of everyday life. Fifteen years with the company, with no prospect of promotion, have left him frustrated, so he follows every avenue to try and make some progress in his career.
Joining him as one of the 'fiddlers' (accountants) are the scheming Harvey and dreamy junior Osborne. Their day is taken up by efforts to get the better of each other or their boss, J. J. Morley. Norma is the office secretary. At home, supportive wife Ros looks after the Wests' three children.
